2018 French Open

As originally written by Tony Miller:

The second Grand Slam of the 2018 tennis season begins Sunday in Paris, on the red dust of Stade Roland Garros. (It's popularly called "clay," but it's brick dust over limestone on top of volcanic rock, all above a three-foot layer of sand.) For the third straight year, Tennis Channel is the exclusive home of cable coverage while NBC steps in on the weekends.

The French Open is the only major that starts on Sunday, which it's done annually since 2006. That makes it a 15-day event, with the first round of singles action spread out over three days.

Broadcast Schedule

Sunday, May 27: Tennis Channel, 5a-3p; NBC, noon-3p

Monday, May 28: Tennis Channel, 5a-3p; NBC, noon-3p (live in ET)

Saturday, June 9: NBC, 9 a.m. (women's singles final)

Sunday, June 10: NBC, 9 a.m. (men's singles final)

The mixed doubles final is set for Thursday, with men's doubles and women's singles on Saturday before men's singles and women's doubles on Sunday.

Tennis Channel Plus -- Tennis Channel's subscription service -- extends its coverage from five courts to 10 this year. The press release boasts more then 350 matches and 700 hours of coverage including online and qualifying, where TC Plus aired all 196 matches live and Tennis Channel aired four days of taped highlights.

My math shows Tennis Channel with 107 hours of linear TV during the main draw, with NBC showing 15 hours live in all time zones and 9 more that are live in ET only.

Commentators

Tennis Channel's analysts include Hall of Famers Martina Navratilova, Jim Courier, Tracy Austin and Lindsay Davenport, along with Justin Gimelstob, James Blake, Paul Annacone and Chanda Rubin. Mary Carillo returns in her hybrid reporter-anchor-interviewer role. The play-by-play staff includes Bill Macatee, Ted Robinson and Ian Eagle in addition to Leif Shiras, Steve Weissman and host Brett Haber. Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim and Entertainment Tonight's Kevin Frazier round out the on-air team.

NBC enlists the services of Ted Robinson, John McEnroe and Carillo.

Last year's tournament used 15 courts: Court Philippe-Chatrier seats 14,840 while Court Suzanne-Lenglen seats 10,068. The remaining 13 courts were numbered 1-6, 8, 10, and 14-18. This year's qualifying tournaments have included courts 7, 9, and 11-13, but not Court 17.

Held over to Monday:

Women's singles [[26]] -- Dulgheru/McHale (court 7, start third set)

Women's singles [[31]] -- Paquet/Parmentier (court 18, third set, 1-3)

Day 2 - Monday, May 28

28 full women's singles matches -- the 16 from the bottom half that weren't played Sunday and 12 from the top half -- plus 2 matches held over

28 men's singles matches -- the 16 from the bottom half that weren't played Sunday and 12 from the top half.

(You'll note that the first two matches on every court are from the bottom half, and the third matches on four courts are the remaining four bottom-half matches. In other words, all 15 courts in use finish the bottom half before starting on the top half.)

26 seeds (12 men and 14 women) are in action, as are 15 Americans (4 men and 11 women). The men's draw will not have a #21 seed: Nick Kyrgios, who was supposed to be the #21 seed, withdrew with an elbow injury after the draw was made and has been replaced by Marco Trungelliti of Argentina.

Once again, temperatures in the upper 70s ... a high of 81, and a 20% chance of rain in the morning becomes 40% and 50% in the afternoon.

2:39 - [TAPE from about 7:05] - Kvitova/Cepede Royg (PC)

Rain prevented one match - Sharapova/Hogenkamp - from getting on court at all. The two matches NBC showed were among six that started but didn't finish.

Day 3 - Tuesday, May 29

21 full women's singles first-round matches, plus one suspended on Monday

20 full men's singles first-round matches, plus five suspended on Monday

11 men's doubles first-round matches

23 singles seeds (11 women, 12 men) and 11 Americans (5 women, 6 men) in action.

2:29 -- Berdych/Chardy

  2:32 -- Lopez/Stahovsky update

2:50 -- Play halted due to incoming weather

2:54 -- Haber previews Wednesday's slate and signs off.

One match -- Halep/Riske -- never got on court. Three others -- Berdych/Chardy, Mayer/Benneteau and Polansky/Herbert -- were in progress. All of them were at least five games, and likely more, from concluding.

(Given that we lost about 80 minutes of play to weather concerns, I think it's highly likely that at least part of Halep/Riske was going to be left unfinished anyway.)

Day 4 - Wednesday, May 30

16 men's singles second-round matches (all bottom half)

16 women's singles second-round matches (all bottom half)

1 women's singles first-round match that didn't get on Tuesday

20 men's doubles first-round matches (all but one in that round)

18 women's doubles first-round matches (as many as they could cram in)

 1 mixed doubles first-round match

3 men's singles first-round matches to finish

75 matches on the busiest day of the tournament thus far.

(The standard operating procedure involves having Wednesday's schedule built by Tuesday evening and then adding the suspended matches to it. The original slate was packed about as full as it could be, so when the suspended matches got added ... you can do the math about why this problem will likely cascade into Friday.)

27 singles seeds, 7 American singles players (two of whom meet each other), and the Williams sisters playing doubles.

3:43 -- Tournament update -- Brett Haber

3:45 -- Sign-off

*There was a discussion with the supervisor about halting play at 9:35 with the score 5-5 in the third, but since Pouille could have ended the match in two more games, they played on. Instead, Norrie won the set and they come back tomorrow.

Pouille/Norrie and Thiem/Tsitsipas will both resume tomorrow as the second match on the same courts they started on. There were also two men's doubles matches -- fifth on Courts 14 and 15 -- that never started.

Day 5 - Thursday, May 31

Thursday. Day 5. The last day of May. The last day on which singles seeds can't meet each other.

16 men's singles matches (top half) -- finishing that round

2 men's singles matches (bottom half), both suspended after 3 sets yesterday

16 women's singles matches (top half) -- finishing that round

3 men's doubles first-round matches -- finishing that round (this includes two that never got on court yesterday)

 7 men's doubles second-round matches -- leaving 9 more for Friday

13 women's doubles first-round matches -- leaving 1 more for Friday

9 mixed doubles first-round matches -- leaving 6 more for Friday

66 matches on 15 courts

28 singles seeds and 7 Americans in action. The intersection of those two groups is men's #9 John Isner and women's #15 Coco Vandeweghe, the latter of whom also plays doubles late in the day. Serena Williams, Taylor Townsend and Bernarda Pera all play seeded opponents. Steve Johnson and Bethanie Mattek-Sands do not.

(Mattek-Sands and Townsend would play each other on Saturday if they win, but that would require Townsend to topple #1 seed Simona Halep.)

From Meteo France, a high of 75 with a chance of thunderstorms, especially mid-afternoon (8-11 a.m. EDT).

Day 6 - Friday, June 1

Friday. Day 6. If past form holds, the last day before we get into juniors matches. (I would use the French Open website to confirm this, but I can't find anything on that website without looking at least three times.)

8 men's singles third-round matches (bottom half) -- leaving 8 for Saturday

8 men's singles third-round matches (top half) -- leaving 8 for Saturday

9 men's doubles second-round matches, finishing that round

1 women's doubles first-round match, finishing that round

8 women's doubles second-round matches -- leaving 8 for Sunday

6 mixed doubles first-round matches, finishing that round

0 matches held over for the first time this week

40 matches on 10 courts

(After today, men's and women's singles will have 24 players left; women's doubles will have 24 pairs left; men's and mixed doubles will each have 16 pairs left. That would set Saturday up for something like 32 tour-level matches and 44 juniors matches.)

The third round marks the first time seeds can play each other: men's singles has four matches between seeds and four with a seed taking on an unseeded player, while the women have three seed-on-seed meetings and one match that will send an unseeded player to the final 16. All told, it's 22 singles seeds, including Serena Williams and Madison Keys.

Meteo France says high of 72 and "risk of thunderstorms."

Day 7 - Saturday, June 2

Saturday. Day 7. The day on which NBC shows up again (live to all time zones from 12-3). We shall see what happens if play continues past 9:00 local time/3:00 EDT.

Meteo France calls for a high of 75 under partly cloudy skies, which means the sun is the only obstacle in determining whether we'll make up the seven-match schedule deficit from Friday's rain delay.

8 men's singles third-round matches (top half), plus

Tennis Channel has the entire day once again, on air from 5:00 to the end of play. Their slate of nine singles matches includes 14 seeds, John Isner at approximately 10 a.m., and Serena Williams at approximately 11:30. The key word is "approximately," as NBC found out the hard way yesterday.

The Meteo France weather forecast is ... not good. Google Translate says "rare showers" from 5-8 a.m. EDT, then "risk of hail" until 5 p.m. EDT.

The schedule would end up consisting of, in effect, six full-blown singles matches and two partial matches.

At 9:19, about 45 minutes before her match with Maria Sharapova would have started, Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament with a pectoral injury sustained on Saturday and aggravated in doubles yesterday.

The Wozniacki-Kasatkina match took all of 16 minutes and three games to complete. It was shown in its entirety.

The Muguruza-Tsurenko match lasted 20 minutes and two games before Tsurenko pulled her hamstring and retired. It was not shown live at all since it came late in the fourth/early in the fifth set of the Cilic-Fognini match.

The abbreviated slate ended at 1:50, leading Tennis Channel to sign off at 2.
