2024 ATP/WTA tours
While the 506 forums and archive have had posts on Grand Slam tennis for several years, those tournaments are a fraction of the tennis season. The four Grand Slams occupy eight weeks of the 46 in the season and include about one-fifth of the matches on the ATP calendar, although they dole out about 28 percent of the total points possible. (Ranking points are weird for several reasons, including byes and the fact that only 18 events per player count, but the most points you can amass in a calendar year is 21,500 and 8,000 of those would come from the four Grand Slams.) The WTA math is a little different but similar.
For obvious reasons, we will not be documenting every match at every tournament. That would be ridiculous and encompass north of 5,000 matches in singles alone. But this post will try to document a bigger part of the calendar by picking up the last few rounds of matches from the next three levels of tournaments.
The tennis rankings are set up so that each tier of tournament gives out roughly twice as many points as the previous one. Grand Slams are worth 2,000 points for the winner and the next tier (formerly the ATP Masters and WTA Premier Mandatory events) are worth 1,000 points, followed by 500 points and 250 for the next two levels.
We don't really see anything resembling regular full-match coverage until the second week of a Grand Slam (unless you're a Williams sister, Coco Gauff or the Big Four men). That means the last 16 singles players for each gender start to get singled out for full matches. Because each round of a single-elimination tournament cuts the field in half, I'm thinking I'll list the last three rounds of the second-tier (1000-level) tournaments, the last two rounds of third-tier (500) tournaments and the final of fourth-tier (250) events. Then we'll throw the year-end finals in as well because those are like 15 singles matches per gender. Again using the men's tour as an example, this expanded listing will account for 57.3% more points with just a 22.6% increase in matches listed.
Seeds listed are from the tournament draws, which are based on the world rankings in all cases but very rarely match the rankings exactly. All players from Russia and Belarus are competing under neutral flags at the moment because of the Russian/Belarussian invasion of Ukraine.
All times are United States EST/EDT and based on the published order of play. "Approximately" means that it has another match before it. Matches are finals, outdoors and on hard courts unless otherwise noted.
Tennis Channel has the rights to everything, except NBC's part of the French Open and the other three majors which are exclusive to ESPN. I did not start tracking commentators until June.
